With Matt Cox and Katy Hawkins
Our processes are rooted in long term thinking around tree health and climate resilience and informed by generous community exchanges and we want to share the inner workings of our tree planting processes with you.
In our Tree Planting Review, Matt and Katy reflect on our planting work from November 2025 to March 2026, talking about what we plant, where we plant and the reasons behind our decision making. They expand on planting metrics and community-led initiatives for greater urban canopy coverage and tree equity.

A summary of our planting review
Planting Strategy and Maintenance
We have planted 106 trees across 22 locations and have implemented a 3-year tree establishment plan. Our planting locations have been chosen based on National Tree Map date and ward data from around Birmingham, working in areas with the lowest tree canopy coverage. Challenges include managing the high annual watering costs that come with a 3-year tree establishment plan for all new trees.
Community Engagement Initiatives
Working alongside local schools and existing communities such as religious groups, and educational facilities, we ensure our projects are guided by those with local knowledge. These partnerships form through ongoing conversations and creative workshops, through which locals inform our decisions around where trees should be planted and what species these trees should be.
Nursery Development and Future
We have recently opened our community nursery at Kings Heath Park where we will cultivate climate-resilient species that will one day be planted around Birmingham. Our work here will expand volunteer-led nursery engagement and specialised tree workshops.
